  • Avoid salt intake. Foods that are high in salt or sodium are at a high risk for a number of health conditions, including heart disease. The elder should try to eat more foods that are low in sodium. If they want to add more flavors to their meals, fresh herbs can do the same thing for them.

Making the Changes

The following tips will help your loved one make the changes needed to live a healthy life.

  • Start small. Instead of making a ton of dieting changes at once, try to gradually incorporate them into their diet. For example, consider having oatmeal a couple times a week for breakfast instead of eggs and bacon.
  • Show them how it is done. It may be easier to say it than actually do it. So, to encourage the elder to make these changes, you should do it with them. Eat the same healthy foods and exercise just as much in order to provide a great example for the elder.
  • Make smoothies. Smoothies are a simple way to get plenty of fruits and vegetables in each
    sip.

There’s an old story about a woman named Rose. At the young, innocent age of 87, she decided to return to college and earn her degree.

While she was there, she made many new friends, worked hard, and was successful in her studies. One day, she was asked to give a speech at the college’s football banquet.
