It is always a good time to take a closer look at safety in and around the home. So, we welcome the opportunity that comes with the fact that January is National Bath Safety Month. That includes everything from the proper way to bath an infant all the way to safeguarding the bathroom area from accidents and mishaps.
We here at Help at Home Homecare would like to take a few moments today to focus on the latter portion of bath safety, especially as it pertains to our elderly or disabled relatives and loved ones.
80% of all in-home slip-and-falls for the elderly take place in their bathrooms. Nothing changes as far as making an older family member’s home safer if they don’t agree along with everyone else to help. Here are 3 simper ways to get started:
Install Handles and Rails
This can be anywhere in the house, but especially by the sink, toilet, and in the shower/bathtub.
Insert No-Slip Decals or Mats in the Tub
These are critical, in addition to in-tub handles.
Use No-Slip Rugs on the Floor
Bathroom floor surfaces are usually very hard, and they can break bones. Anti-slip rugs in the same areas as the handles are a wise suggestion.
